Vernon E. Mason Kyoshi a prominent figure in the sport of karate, is recognized as one of the world's best kickers. Born and raised in Hampton, Virginia, he developed an interest in karate after watching Bruce Lee movies. Nicknamed "Thunder Kick," Vernon Mason began his karate training in 1970 at the age of 11 under Sensei Turner.
By 1975, Mr. Mason was already teaching at Frank Hargrove Hanshi's dojo. In 1976, he and several other students traveled with Hargrove Hanshi to Okinawa, Japan, to gain an in-depth understanding of Karate-Do. He earned the nickname "Thunder Kick" after knocking out most of his opponents within a minute using head kicks. Upon returning from Okinawa, he received his Shodan (Black Belt) and discovered his passion for full-contact fighting, thanks to his ability to strike his opponents with ease.
By 1979, Kyoshi had risen to the rank of number two contender in the world, with Sonny Onawa from Okinawa holding the top position. There was potential for a World Bantamweight Championship fight, but the Professional Karate Association (PKA) needed a promoter. At that time, Mr. Mason was in Richmond, Virginia, training with Dan Wilson. Frank Hargrove Hanshi proposed to promote the World Title in Virginia Beach if Vernon Mason would return to Hampton to train under his guidance. Mr. Mason agreed to move back, and Dan Wilson accompanied him to prepare for the title fight.
On August 25, 1979, at the age of 19, Mr. Mason's dedication paid off when he knocked out Sonny Onawa just fifty-four seconds into the ninth round, becoming the first World PKA Bantamweight Champion.
In 1981, Vernon successfully defended his title but suffered his first loss in his professional career.
By 1986, he opened Okinawan USA Karate-Do, Inc. in Hampton, Virginia.
